From the Jodhaa-Akbar attire to the temple wedding avatar, brides and grooms are making style statements this wedding season.
The theme party trend has finally trickled down to the most traditional of all weddings. This season, try and spot the avatar-of choice for bride or groom -is that a Jodha-Akbar tribute or `Gandharva' chic or maybe they're playing `Maharajas'?
And it's not just the brides and grooms, but their entire families who get into theme attire that is then `matched' with the décor of the reception area.
"Young brides and bridegrooms are going for the Jodha-Akbar look or the temple style attire. Brides are going back to tradition with a little fusion and grooms are dressing up in opulent Maharaja style with the scarf and other accessories. Earlier the couple would select their wedding attire in such a way that they can wear it later too. But this wedding season, fusion are the `in' themes."
Interestingly, the Khaja coat and mana sampradaya pancha kattu dhoti are making a comeback with grooms and their male relatives.
Designer Shravani includes several young bridegrooms, agrees that there is a `back to basics' trend. This wedding season, the Khaja coat with a pancha or a dhoti is a popular theme. Brides and bridegrooms are particular about dressing up in `Avadhi' or `Gandharva' style.
Young men are getting as fussy about their hair and accessories as traditional `bride right down to make-up! . For the hair style, it is the European bridegroom look and the prince look that are in demand. The colour scheme of the stage and decorations were also co-ordinated.
The time-honoured poola jada, flowers in the bride's hair, has now been replaced by heavy, traditional gold jewellery including the gold-studded kutchulu.
"Brides these days are well read and know for sure what is in fashion and what is not. They also want to get back to their roots, in lots of ways. They are fusing fashion and tradition. Elders in the family are confined to suggestions only. It's the young brides and grooms who take the call on what to wear and hence theme weddings are getting popular.
